Vivian was not overly interested in marrying, but all her friends were concentrating on finding a husband so she thought she better join the fray. Her friends were all practicing being coquettish, embellishing the truth, and perfecting the art of manipulation and insincerity. Vivian's gifts lay in being direct, honest, and pointing out realities that made everyone around her incredibly uncomfortable. She was not good at the other stuff, so she decided to reach out to her aunt.

Aunt Prudence had been married five times, her husbands all having died within a few years after the marriage....
